BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington baseball team scored three runs with two outs in the ninth inning, but came up one run short of a comeback as the Huskies fell to California, 7-6, in a Pac-12 game at Evans Diamond.
The Huskies (17-14 overall, 4-6 in the Pac-12) entered the ninth trailing 7-3, but pushed across three runs, all with two outs. The UW had the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position when the game ended. California improved to 18-14 on the season and 3-7 in the Pac-12.
Cal starter Michael Theofanopoulos (3-3) picked the victory. Over six and two-thirds innings, he allowed three runs on 10 hits. Joey Donofrio pitched the final two and one-third innings for the save.
Husky starter Aaron West (4-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on 10 hits and no walks over six and one-third innings.
The Huskies collected 13 hits in the game, led by three each from Jayce Ray, Joe Meggs and Trevor Mitsui.
Washington took the game's first lead with a run in the second as Caleb Brown walked and eventually scored from third on a B.K. Santy sacrifice fly.
In the third, the Bears went on top with a pair of runs. With runners at second and third, second baseman Tony Renda sent a two-out single through the right side, scoring two to give Cal a 2-1 edge. In the fourth, the Bears stretched the advantage to 3-1 when Darrel Matthews came in from third on a Derek Campbell groundout.
Washington struck for two in the seventh to draw even. Mitsui opened the inning with a double. He scored on an error in the outfield after a single from Santy. After moving up on a bunt, Santy scored on a Ray single to tie the score at 3-3.
However in the bottom of the seventh, the Bears went back in front. Vince Bruno got things started by reaching on a one-out double. After a second out, Renda doubled to drive him in and then scored on an error to make it 5-3.
In the eighth, the Bears added to their lead as a bad-hop single past first base brought home two more, stretching the advantage to 7-3.
Washington mounted a rally in the ninth. After Mitsui singled, Ray was hit by a pitch and Meggs singled to load the bases, a two-out, pinch-hit single from Ryan Wiggins pushed one run across. Caleb Brown followed with a ground ball to second that was mishandled by Renda, allowing a fifth Husky run to score.
With pinch hitter Michael Camporeale at the plate, a wild pitch from Donofrio allowed Meggs to score from third, drawing the Huskies within a run and moving the tying run to third, but Camporeale grounded to shortstop to end the game.
The series continues with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
