Last-Minute Goal Sends Pilots Over Huskies

SEATTLE - In the 2011 men's home opener, the UW soccer team had plenty of opportunities to score, but it was a goal in the last minute by Portland that lifted the Pilots to a 1-0 victory and handed UW its first loss of the season. UW falls to 3-1-2 and Portland improves to 3-2-1. Both teams will compete in the Husky Fever Classic this weekend at Husky Soccer Field.
UW had 24 shots in the game, 11 in the first half and 13 in the second half, led by senior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) with nine. Fellow senior Jacob Hustedt (Sandy, Utah) had five shots of his own. Portland took just seven shots in the game but made the one that mattered.
With 56 seconds left in regulation and the game looking like it was headed for overtime, Portland's Steven Evans took a nice shot on a pass from Derek Boggs on the left side of the box and snuck it past UW keeper Spencer Richey for the win.
It was just the second goal of the season allowed by UW's defense and Richey, a sophomore from Seattle.
The Huskies take on Houston Baptist on Friday at 7 p.m. Free pizza will be provided to all students from head coach Jamie Clark. Students get into the game for free with their Husky ID card.
