AUBURN, Wash. - The Washington Husky women's golf team will enter Saturday's final round of the NCAA West Regional in position to advance to the NCAA Championship, thanks in large part to a new Washington National Golf Club course-record set by Sadena Parks on Friday.
Parks, a junior from Bethel, Wash., shot a 6-under 66 to top the previous women's record of 67 set in 2002 during the NCAA Championship by Washington's Louise Friberg and Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum.
Parks, who began the round on the 10th tee, caught fire on the second nine after making the turn on No. 18 at 1-under. She would start a birdie streak on No. 3 that spanned four holes and then add a final birdie on No. 8. Parks struggled with an 81 on Thursday and had a simple explanation as to why she was able to shoot the lights out on Friday.
"I just played golf," dead-panned Parks, who moved up from 94th to 13th on the leaderboard. "Yesterday, I worked on mechanics, and today I was just focused on playing golf. Obviously, it worked.
"I did fire at a lot of pins today. Yesterday I tried to, but it just wasn't one of those days. Today, I felt very comfortable over the ball, very confident and I just went for it. I didn't second-guess myself."
Not only was Parks' 66 the course record for a woman, but it was the best score of her life. She had previously shot a 67 several years ago during a fundraiser while playing in Portland. But she never had a round like Friday, on a big stage like a NCAA Regional.
"It was very exciting. It shows myself that I've matured and I've come a long way. But I've got a long way to go," said Parks.
Washington combined for a 294 (+6) and was able to move from a tie for 10th in the team standings up to sixth. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship held May 18-21 at Texas A&M's Legend Course.
USC continues to lead the field and is the only team under par at -4 overall 572. The Trojans shot a 4-under 284 and Tennessee is second as the only other team that remains under double-digits over par at +3. The Volunteers combined to shoot a 1-under 287 on Friday.
Virginia is third, followed by UC Davis, Arizona and Washington. South Carolina is seventh, while Oregon and Texas A&M are tied for eighth.
Individually, Tennessee's Erica Popson entered the clubhouse in the evening where she started the day - on top of the leaderboard. She moved to -7 (137) after a 3-under 69 on Friday.
USC's Lizette Salas is alone in second at -4. She threatened Parks' new course record all day and had to settle for a 5-under 67 - thanks to a 20-foot birdie putt to end her round on No. 9.
UC Davis' Demi Runas is third at 141 (-3), while USC's Sophia Popov is fourth at -2.
Parks, who is +3 overall for the tournament, was eight strokes better than the next best Husky on the day. UW Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur lauded the importance of her play after the round.
"You need somebody to give you that, especially after our two seniors struggled a little bit today," said Mulflur. "She stepped up big-time, so I'm really excited for her and pleased for the team today, too."
Senior Anya Alvarez began the day fourth among individuals, but shot a 6-over 78 and dropped all the way into a tie for 20th. She is +4 overall.
Freshman A Ram Choi continued her strong play with the second-best round among Huskies for the second-straight day. On Friday, she shot a 2-over 74 and is +6 overall and tied for 32nd.
Final round action begins on Saturday at 8:00 on both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Washington is slated to tee off from No. 10 at 9:06 paired with UC Davis and Arizona.
