STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford starting pitcher Mark Appel gave up just one earned run over eight innings as the Cardinal beat the Washington baseball team, 6-2, Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
Appel (4-5) picked up the victory, giving up a total of two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out nine in his eight innings. After allowing the first two batters in the ninth to reach base, he gave way to Chris Reed, who closed it out for his sixth save of the season.
Husky starter Geoff Brown (1-6) suffered the loss, allowing five runs over three innings. Freshman reliever Zach Wright pitched five innings out of the bullpen, allowing only one run and retiring nine in a row at one stretch.
Stanford (23-19, 7-9 Pac-10) took the lead with a pair of runs in the first. Zach Jones and Tyler Gaffney singled to lead off the inning. After moving up on a wild pitch, Jones scored on a groundout and Gaffney came in on a sacrifice fly.
Washington (13-28, 4-12) got one back in the second as catcher B.K. Santy was hit by a pitch and eventually scoring on a two-out single from Eric Peterson.
However, the Cardinal stretched the lead to 4-1 in the third as Gaffney and Stephen Piscotty opened the inning with back-to-back singles and, after a sacrifice, came around to score on a double from Kenny Diekroeger. In the fourth, Gaffney drove a triple to left-center to bring in one more run, making it 5-1.
The Huskies scored a run in the top of the eighth when freshman pinch hitter Spencer Rogers singled and eventually scored on a Brendan Gardner-Young groundout. Stanford, however, stretched its lead back to four runs when Lonnie Kauppila led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, took third on a double from Dave Giuliani and scored on an Austin Wilson sacrifice fly.
Senior third baseman Troy Scott was the lone Husky with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 for the UW.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday before wrapping up with noon finale on Sunday.
