TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona's Kurt Heyer worked a complete-game shutout as the Wildcats beat the Washington baseball team, 9-0, Friday night in the first game of a season-ending, Pac-10 series at Kindall Field.
The Huskies (17-35 overall, 6-19 Pac-10) got a 3-for-3 night from sophomore right fielder Chase Anselment, while senior Brendan Gardner-Young with 2-for-3. Arizona's Robert Refsnyder was 2-for-2 with three RBI and Bobby Rinard went 3-for-3 with two batted in.
Heyer (8-3) allowed seven hits (all singles), didn't walk a man and struck out five for the victory. UW starter Geoff Brown (1-8) was charged with eight runs on nine hits over six and one-third innings in the loss.
After going down in order in the first, the Wildcats (34-19, 13-12 Pac-10) struck quickly in the second. Johnny Field led off the inning by tripling to right and Refsnyder followed with a single to left to drive him in. After two flyouts and a single from Rinard put runners at first and third, the Wildcats pulled a double steal and Refsnyder scored from third.
Seth Mejias-Brean then tripled to left, scoring Rinard, and then came in on an infield single from Joey Rickard to give Arizona a 4-0 lead.
The 'Cats added on in the third. With the bases loaded on a single, a hit batter and a walk, Jett Bandy bounced into a force at second to score one. Rinard's sacrifice fly to center scored another to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Refsnyder delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eight to add two more and Rinard hit his first home run of the season in the eighth to cap the Wildcats' scoring.
The Huskies and Wildcats play again Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and the UW season comes to a close with a noon game on Sunday.
