SEATTLE - Jacob Clem tossed a complete-game shutout in his final home game as a Husky as the Washington baseball team turned the tables on No. 8 Arizona State for a 3-0 win Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Clem, a fifth-year righty from Burlington, made the most of Senior Day, holding the Sun Devils scoreless on six hits. He improved to 4-5 on the season, walking one and striking out two in the shutout, his second of the season.
The previous two games, ASU (38-14 overall, 16-8 Pac-10) had shutout Washington (16-34, 6-18).
ASU starter Kyle Ottoson (3-1) suffered the loss. In his four and one-third innings, he gave up two runs on four hits.
Washington had several early chances to score, putting runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the first, third and fourth innings.
In the fifth, with the game still scoreless, the Huskies finally broke through. After walks to Reggie Jones and Brendan Gardner-Young, ASU starter Kyle Ottoson was relieved by Alex Blackford, whose first pitch to Jacob Lamb was belted to the wall in center for a double, scoring Jones.
After a strikeout had given the Devils a chance to get off the hook trailing by only a run, freshman DH Ryan Wiggins smashed a double off the fence in left-center, scoring Lamb and Gardner-Young to stake the Huskies to a 3-0 lead.
The Sun Devils had been held to just one hit and three base-runners over the first six innings prior to mounting their first threat in the seventh. ASU loaded the bases on three singles no outs. However, Deven Marrero hit a ground ball to third and the lead runner was thrown out at the plate for one out, and the inning then came to an end as Clem got Austin Barnes to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, keeping the 3-0 lead in tact.
The Huskies close out the season with four games this week. Tuesday, the Dawgs face Washington State in a non-conference game in Pasco, Wash. Next weekend ,the UW travels to Tucson for a three-game series at Arizona.
