SEATTLE - After falling 9-3 to No. 2 Oregon State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, the Washington baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game as Troy Scott's ninth-inning, bases-loaded walk broke a 6-6 tie and lifted the Huskies to a 7-6 victory at Husky Ballpark.
The doubleheader was scheduled to avoid forecasts of rain for Sunday.
In the nightcap, the Huskies (14-32 overall, 5-16 in the Pac-10) trailed 6-0 heading into the sixth inning. They scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh before getting a run in the ninth to win it.
In the ninth, freshman center fielder Will Sparks, who entered the game 5-for-21 on the season but had four hits in the nightcap, led off with a double. Joe Meggs then reached on a bunt single and Jacob Lamb was intentionally walked to load the bases for Scott, who took a full-count pitch down and in to win the game.
In game one, Oregon State (37-12 overall, 16-5 in the Pac-10) scored eight of its nine runs on four home runs. Beavers ace Sam Gaviglio improved to 10-1 with the win, allowing three unearned runs on 10 hits over five and two-thirds innings. Scott Schultz pitched the final three and one-third innings for a save. UW freshman Jeff Brigham (3-1) suffered his first loss, giving up seven runs over six innings.
In the opener, OSU took lead in the first as Danny Hayes drew a two-out walk and scored on a double from Kavin Keyes. Catcher Andrew Susac followed with his fifth homer of the season and Ryan Dunn went back-to-back with his fourth of the season, staking the Beavers to a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies, who had notched six hits over the first three innings without scoring a run, finally broke through in the fourth. After loading the bases on an error, a walk and a single, freshman second baseman Reggie Jones bounced into a very well-turned double play, allowing B.K. Santy to score from third.
In the fifth, the Huskies continued to chip away. This time, the Huskies loaded the bases on an error and two singles. OSU looked like it might get off the hook as Eric Peterson lined sharply into a double play. But Santy came through with a two-out double deep to the gap in right-center, scoring a pair of baserunners to make it a 4-3 Beavers lead.
In the sixth, the Beavers, who had managed only one hit since their first-inning outburst, used the long ball to stretch the lead back to four. With two on and one out, second baseman Jake Rodriguez belted his first homer of the season in the visitors' bullpen in left, making it a 7-3 lead. In the seventh, Keyes hit his first round-tripper, a two-run shot to right, to make it 9-3.
In the nightcap, the Beavers picked up where they left off as first baseman Danny Hayes opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. In the second, Carter Bell singled, took third on a Parker Berberet double and scored on a groundout from Brian Stamps, increasing the lead to 3-0.
In the third, Oregon State scored three more as a Susac triple drove in a pair and a single from Bell brought Susac home.
While Husky starter Austin Voth settled in and held the Beavers scoreless through the middle innings, the Huskies got on the board in the sixth when Sparks led off with a triple and scored on a double from Meggs, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Meggs scored on a single from Troy Scott to make it a 6-2 Beavers lead.
UW freshman catcher Ryan Wiggins led off the bottom of the seventh with his first Husky homer, cutting the lead to 6-3. Chase Anselment followed the homer with a double and Ty Afenir was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate in Reggie Jones, whose double drove in Anselment and put the tying runs at second and third.
Sparks followed with a single up the middle, driving in Afenir and Jones to tie the score at 6-6.
Sparks finished the second game 4-for-5 with two RBI while Wiggins went 3-for-4.
Reliever Adam Cimber (3-4) pitched three scoreless innings for the win in game two. OSU closer Tony Bryant (3-2) was charged with the loss, allowing a run on three hits.
The Huskies will take Sunday off before playing host to Pacific on Monday in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game. Next Friday through Sunday, the Dawgs wrap up the home schedule with a three-game series vs. Arizona State.
