Dawgs Rally For Tie In Ninth, But Fall, 3-2, At UCLA

LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team rallied in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs to forge a 2-2 tie, but 24th-ranked UCLA scored on a one-out, RBI double from Cody Regis in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Huskies, 3-2, and complete a Pac-10 series sweep.
It was the eighth straight Husky baseball game decided by one or two runs. UCLA won the first two games of the series, 2-1 and 5-3. Washington fell to 7-18 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-10 with the loss, while UCLA improved to 14-9 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
In the top of the ninth, Joe Meggs opened the inning by reaching on an error. After moving to second on a groundout, he scored when Troy Scott sent a double down the left-field line. After a second out, Spencer Rogers reached on an error to put runners at first and third. Rogers moved to second on a passed ball before Eric Peterson laced a single through the left side, scoring pinch runner Reggie Jones from third to tie the game. However, Rogers was thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the score tied 2-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dean Espy reached on a one-out single and then scored from first on a shot to the right-center gap from Regis.
UCLA reliever Nick Vander Tuig (2-1), who was victimized by a pair of unearned runs in the ninth to surrender the lead, picked up the win. Husky sophomore Adam Cimber (1-1), who allowed just one run on two hits over two and one-third innings, suffered the loss.
Both teams had freshmen starting pitchers turn in terrific performances. UW's Austin Voth pitched six innings for the loss, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three. UCLA's Adam Plutko worked seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit, two walks and six strikeouts.
Neither team was able to do much offensively until the Bruins finally scored a run in the fifth. In fact, through four and a half innings, each team had only one hit and a combined four base runners.
But, in the fifth, Chris Giovinazzo led off with a walk, Voth's only free pass of the day. After moving to second on a bunt, he came in when Steve Rodriguez singled to left. Rodriguez was thrown out at second base after a throw to the plate, ending the inning with UCLA in front, 1-0.
In the seventh, Regis led off the inning with a triple to right-center field, and Cimber came on to replace Voth. Giovinazzo followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Regis to increase the Bruins' lead to 2-0.
Plutko was relieved by Mitchell Beacom to begin the top of the eighth. He gave up a leadoff, pinch-hit single to Peterson, who moved to third on a couple of groundouts, but he was stranded as the inning ended on a strikeout.
The Huskies return to the Northwest for their next five games, though all are on the road. The UW takes on SeattleU Tuesday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue and then travels to Oregon next weekend. The following Tuesday, April 12, the UW heads to Bellevue for another game vs. the Redhawks.
