SEATTLE - Five seniors bid farewell to the home crowd today, as the Washington men's tennis team hosted Senior Day at the Bill <!>Quillian Stadium. In the final home match of the regular season, the 20th-ranked Huskies rolled to a 6-1 win over Portland, and UW's three senior starters all recorded wins in their final home appearances.
Washington (16-8, 2-3 Pac-10) could still potentially host NCAA tournament play, but that won't be known for a few more weeks. For now, the seniors viewed it as their final appearance after four memorable years. Seniors honored today included Brad Bator, Martin Kildahl, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, Tobi Obenaus, and Alex Rosinski.
Doubles play begin with a school record, as Nedunchezhiyan became the new Washington career leader with his 84th victory today, surpassing former Huskies Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu. Nedunchezhiyan teamed with Kyle McMorrow for the 8-5 win over Portland's Ferrero and Gill. Obenaus and Kildahl then clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at second doubles. Kildahl isn't far behind Nedunchezhiyan, as he won his 76th career doubles match today, fifth-most at UW.
The seniors made the most of their final singles matches as well. Kildahl quickly overcame Bryan Thorp at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Obenaus was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Ratan Gill in the fifth spot.
After UW had clinched the victory, Nedunchezhiyan was the final Husky left competing at No. 1 singles. Several matches were already finished by the time Nedunchezhiyan saved a couple set points and won his first set in a tiebreak over Alex Ferrero. On serve in the second at 4-3, Nedunchezhiyan found the sideline with a looping passing shot to break, and then served it out for a 6-3 second set win to close out the day.
Also posting an impressive win today for UW was sophomore Marton Bots, who was first to finish with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Justin Guay. Sophomore Kyle McMorrow had the clinching fourth point as he defeated Geoff Hernandez, 6-3, 6-0, at second singles.
Washington will finish the regular season next weekend at Oregon. The Pac-10 Championships will follow and then the NCAA tourney begins mid-May.
