LOS ANGELES - The Husky men's tennis team dropped its first Pac-10 road match of the year today at 16th-ranked UCLA by a 5-2 margin. The Bruins (12-5, 1-2 Pac-10) pulled out an extremely tight doubles point, and then went on to take four of six singles matches from the 20th-ranked Huskies (14-6, 1-1 Pac-10) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Losing a tough doubles point may have knocked some of the wind out of the Husky sails. Washington had won nine doubles points in a row with their last loss coming against No. 1-ranked Virginia. Coming through once again today was sophomore Marton Bots and freshman Daniel Schmidt at the No. 3 spot, where they defeated UCLA's Kosakowski and Seguso, 8-5, for their ninth win in a row. But UCLA had an 8-5 win of its own at No. 2 doubles, with seniors Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus suffering the setback.
That left the point to be decided on the No. 1 court. 31st-ranked Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan battled into a tiebreaker against Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget, but the Bruin duo hung on for a 9-7 tiebreak win to clinch the point.
The doubles momentum carried into singles where UCLA won five of the six first sets. Kyle McMorrow moved into the No. 1 singles spot for the first time in a Pac-10 match, but he struggled against 33rd-ranked Daniel Kosakowski, falling 6-1, 6-3. Schmidt had a straight set loss to Adrien Puget at No. 4 singles, and UCLA clinched the match when Holden Seguso defeated Bots, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Nedunchezhiyan did close out the match with an impressive win for the Dawgs at second singles. In a battle of closely-ranked seniors, 74th-ranked Nedunchezhiyan defeated 71st-ranked Amit Inbar, 7-6, 6-4. The other Husky point came at fifth singles, where UCLA's Max Tabatruong retired despite winning the first set, 7-5, over Obenaus.
Washington will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as take another swing at an upset against second-ranked USC.
