Huskies Roll To Road Win Over Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Away from home for just the second time this season, the Husky men's tennis team notched its first true road win of the year, downing 47th-ranked Santa Clara, 5-1, at the Degheri Tennis Center. The 20th-ranked Huskies improve to 13-4 on the year with their sixth consecutive victory.
The Broncos had been 6-0 at home until this afternoon's match. The teams decided to start with singles play due to inclement weather in the area, and after Washington took five of the six singles matches, the teams chose not to play out the doubles point.
Washington posted the day's first point as freshman Daniel Schmidt rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Nicholas Vinel. But Santa Clara tied it up at 1-1 as Tom Pham defeated senior Tobi Obenaus, 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles. Pham owns a 12-1 dual record.
The Huskies earned a couple key tiebreak wins in the next two matches to pull away. 52nd-ranked sophomore Kyle McMorrow cloused out Maxime Armengaud, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, then 71st-ranked senior Martin Kildahl knocked off John Lamble, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.
Senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, ranked 86th, gave the Dawgs an insurmountable 4-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles match over Kyle Dandan. Sophomore Marton Bots then wrapped up the day with a three set win over Eugene Muchynski. Bots roared back from a 6-4 first set loss to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Huskies will now head home to open up Pac-10 play this Friday against Arizona. First serve is set for 3 p.m., which follows the Husky women's tennis team's dual against Arizona State.
