SEATTLE - Washington looked sharp in its second match of the season against a ranked opponent, rolling to a 6-1 win over 40th-ranked Denver tonight at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan scored the biggest win, knocking off 25th-ranked Enej Bonin at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-4.
The Huskies, ranked 25th, improve to 5-0 on the year while Denver drops to 1-3, though all three losses have come against Top-25 teams. Nedunchezhiyan improved to 5-0 at No. 1 singles this season with his victory. The senior, ranked 92nd, has not dropped a set and now owns wins over players ranked 25th and 62nd.
Sophomore Marton Bots picked up the clinching point, as he won the final four games to finish off a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alex Clinkerbeard at sixth singles. 81st-ranked sophomore Kyle McMorrow dominated his No. 2 singles match with Yannick Weihs, 6-1, 6-0, to also improve to 5-0.
Senior Martin Kildahl is the third Husky at 5-0 now in singles play, as he frustrated Andrew Landwerlen, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Fellow senior Tobi Obenaus turned out the lights on the Pioneers with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jonathan Kidane at fifth singles.
Denver's only point came at No. 3, where freshman Daniel Schmidt made his Husky debut but fought some first match jitters and dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to Jens Vorkefeld. The Vienna, Austria native joined UW at the start of winter quarter, and in his first eligible match, he jumped right into the middle of UW's lineup.
"I thought we did well and came out playing tough," said head coach Matt Anger. "In the doubles, I liked how we came out compared to last Saturday, and then in singles I thought we played tough. I felt a little bad for Daniel Schmidt playing his first match against a pretty good team and unfortunately he wasn't able to get through, but each match he'll get more and more comfortable out there so I'm not worried about that. The guys did a very good job though, as that was the only court we dropped a set."
After a surprising loss in doubles last time out against Cal Poly, the Huskies came out with a really solid effort to sweep doubles and take the 1-0 lead. 30th-ranked Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow broke early for a 3-0 lead, and broke again late to beat Landwerlen and Vorkefeld, 8-3 at No. 1. In the third spot, Bots and senior Brad Bator clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Weihs and Kidane. Finally, after falling behind 0-5, 33rd-ranked Kildahl and Obenaus came all the way back to pull out an 8-6 win over Biasion and Bonin at the No. 2 spot to remain a perfect 5-0 in dual play.
Tomorrow the Huskies will be tested again, as 37th-ranked Nebraska is in town for a 4 p.m. match-up. That match concludes an opening six-match homestand as UW will head to Michigan next week.
