SAN MARCOS, Texas - A grand slam from Nebraska's Kash Kalkowski highlighted a six-run third inning and led the Cornhuskiers to a 10-3 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday night at the Texas State Tournament.
The Huskies fell to 1-1 on the young season, having beating Missouri State in the season opener on Friday. Nebraska improved to 2-1 on the year.
UW starter Michael Garber, a junior college transfer making his first appearance at Washington, suffered the loss. In his two innings, he gave up four runs on four hits. Junior catcher B.K. Santy added a pair of hits, including a double, for the Huskies.
Nebraska's Tom Lemke earned the winning, allowing two runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings. Casey Hauptman worked the final three and a third for the save.
Nebraska got things started with a run in the first when Cody Asche's single drove in a run.
In the third, the Huskers had already scored a pair of runs - on a sacrifice fly from Cory Burleson and a single from Chad Christensen - before Kalkowski's grand slam increased Nebraska's lead to 7-0.
Burleson doubled home a run in the fourth to make it 8-0.
Washington opened its scoring in the fifth. Freshman DH Ryan Wiggins singled and, after a groundout moved him to second, he scored on a single from Santy, the Huskies' new JC transfer catcher from San Diego.
In the bottom of the fifth, Josh Scheffert's bases-loaded sacrifice fly added another for Nebraska, making it a 9-1 lead for the Huskers.
Washington opened the sixth inning by loading the bases on a double from freshman Spencer Rogers and singles from Brian Wolfe and Chase Anselment. A sacrifice fly from Jacob Lamb on a fly to the track brought home Rogers, but a force play at third and a strikeout ended the threat with NU in front, 9-2.
The Huskies picked up another run in the seventh when Santy doubled and came around on a single from freshman second baseman Willy Reel. Nebraska closed out the scoring on another sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Husky freshman reliever Jeff Gonzales had a solid college debut. He worked the final three innings of the game for the UW, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.
The Huskies' opening weekend closes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. PT game vs. Air Force. Fans can catch live stats via a link from gohuskies.com.
