McMorrow Gets One Upset, Just Misses A Second

TULSA, Okla. - Kyle McMorrow picked up the first main draw win of his career in one of the three college tennis majors to start his junior season this morning, but he lost a tough three setter in his second round match at the ITA All-American Championships. Still, the earlier win was a big one, as McMorrow upset eighth-ranked Evan King of Michigan, the No. 7 seed in the 64-player tournament hosted by the University of Tulsa.
McMorrow was an automatic entrant into the main draw of the year's first major. Last year he advanced to the final round of qualifying. He ended his sophomore season by qualifying for the NCAA Singles Championships for the first time, but fell in the first round. So today's win over King got him into the win column for the first time in the three majors.
Ranked 22nd, a career-best, McMorrow posted one of his best wins today, defeating King in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. It is McMorrow's first career win over a top-10 opponent. King was an ITA All-American last season.
In the second round, McMorrow faced 16th-ranked Daniel Nguyen of USC. The first set went Washington's way, 6-4, but the Trojan bounced back with a 6-2 second set win. An early service break held up for Nguyen in the third, as he closed it out, 6-4.
The full Husky squad will make its debut in two weeks when Washington hosts the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, which qualifies the victors for the second major, the ITA National Indoor Championships.
