Huskies Kick Off Regionals At Home With Ten Wins

SEATTLE - The Husky men's tennis team opened the Nordstrom Tennis Center for the fall with a marathon day of action, as the ITA Northwest Regional Championships are back in Seattle for the first time since 2007. Seven Huskies combined to go 10-1 on day one, six Dawgs advancing into the third round of the singles bracket.
Play began at 8 a.m. and lasted until midnight at the Nordstrom. The Regional Championships are held all around the country, and are the first big fall test for many teams. The Northwest Region spans Washington state, Oregon state, and Northern California, and includes Pac-12 rivals Stanford, California, and Oregon. Winners of the singles and doubles title earn automatic entry into next month's ITA National Indoor Championships.
Two Huskies made their collegiate debuts today, and a third played in his new home for the first time. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar let out some pent up energy after practicing for over a year waiting for this day. He rolled through his first round match without dropping a game, beating Chris Aria of UC Davis, 6-0, 6-0. He was nearly as strong in his night match, knocking off Daniel Coelho of Portland, 6-1, 6-1.
Jeff Hawke of Rolling Hills Estates, California, also made his college debut today, and notched his first victory. He topped Eastern Washington's Chris Eriksson, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. Hawke fought hard in his second match, extending Tom Pham of Santa Clara to three sets, but Pham pulled away in the third for a 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 victory.
The third freshman to make his home debut today was Emmett Egger of Issaquah. Egger got a couple matches under his belt at the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month, so it was not his collegiate debut, but in his first home appearance he breezed to a second round win over Andrew Anderson of Seattle U., 6-0, 6-1. Egger, the No. 9 seed, had a first round bye.
Second-seeded junior Kyle McMorrow also had an opening round bye, then took to court four in the afternoon against Kyle Miller of UC Davis. McMorrow pulled away for a 6-2 first set win, then fell behind 0-2 in the second set before taking six straight games for the 6-2 second set.
Also playing just once after a bye was junior Marton Bots, who opened his fall season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over George Horowitz of UC Davis. Sophomore Max Manthou played four solid sets of tennis, beating Portland State's Zach Lubek, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, and then coming back to beat Jacob Hartwig of San Francisco, 7-5, 6-2 in round two.
The last match on court was Husky senior Matt Stith against Portland's Michel Hukwo. Stith beat Jonathon Knowlman of San Francisco in the first round, 7-5, 7-5. He took the first set off of Hukwo, 6-3, but the Pilot took the second set, 6-4. Down 2-4 in the third set, Stith came back to tie it up at 5-all. Serving down 5-6, Stith saved three match points to hold and force a tiebreak. Stith finished off his marathon day with some big serving in the breaker, pulling it out 7-4 to advance.
The tournament, which is free to all spectators, continues through the weekend until Tuesday. Two rounds of doubles play and a round of singles will be played Saturday.
