PALO ALTO, Calif. - Years ago Jamie Clark was on the other sidelines in Cardinal playing for Stanford against Washington. This time, he coached the Huskies against his alma mater in the Pac-12 for the first time, coming out on top, 2-0.
The Huskies picked up their seventh win of the season, improving to 7-3-1 and 2-2-0 in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal fell to 3-6-3 and 0-3-1. These two teams will meet again Oct. 21 in Seattle at 7 p.m.
"It was the most complete performance of the season," Clark said after the game. "I'm very proud of our team. Stanford is a special place. I enjoyed four great years there and it will always be special. That being said, I'm a Husky now and my job is to build teams that can come to Palo Alto and win games."
It was the sixth shutout of the season for sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) who made three saves in the game.
Senior Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) scored the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute. It was his fourth goal of the season and second game-winner. Fellow senior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) picked up his second assist of the season.
"Goals are finally going in for me," said McCool. "The win was huge because these two are basically must wins this weekend and now we have the confidence from this game tonight on our side for Sunday."
It was a great game for the senior class, as Jacob Hustedt (Sandy, Utah) scored an insurance goal in the 70th minute, unassisted. It was his second goal of the season.
"I finally got my first goal in the run of play," Hustedt said. "It was a great win on the road for us and we just need to keep focused and win Sunday."
UW took 17 shots, six on goal and held Stanford to 10 total shots.
The Huskies will stay in the Bay Area to take on Cal on Sunday at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.gohuskies.com.
