SEATTLE - The grey skies outside did not translate into blue moods inside, as the No. 26 Huskies defeated Cal Poly this afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies were surprised in doubles play, falling behind 1-0, but the mood stayed high and the crowd continued to cheer as the Huskies answered the wake up call and swept singles for a 6-1 victory. Washington improves to 4-0 for the year and Cal Poly drops to 2-1.
Five of the six singles matches were won easily by the Huskies, each in straight sets. The 81st ranked sophomore Kyle McMorrow, the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, defeated Jordan Bridge 6-2, 4-0 with Bridge retiring, making the score an even 1-1. Senior Brad Bator put the Huskies ahead 2-1 in the No. 6 match, finishing ahead of Marco Comuzzo 6-3, 6-1.
In the No. 5 match, sophomore Marton Bots had an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win in the third outing of his college career. After Bots' win, the Huskies were now up 3-1. The 92nd ranked senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan put the Huskies up 4-1 when he defeated Andre Dome 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 match. This match continued his unblemished set streak to start the new year. Senior Tobi Obernaus continued the Huskies' streak of singles' wins in the No. 4 match, defeating Alex Sonesson 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Martin Kildahl, ranked 83rd, put the icing on the cake for the Huskies in the No. 3 match 6-4, 4-6, and 10-5 in the super-tiebreak over Brian McPhee, the only singles match to go into three sets.
Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus, #33 doubles team in the nation and playing in the No. 2 doubles match today, continued a great season so far in their defeat of Cal Poly's Brian McPhee/Drew Jacobs team in the tiebreaker 6-5 (7-3). The other two doubles matches went to the Mustangs. Cal Poly's Dome/Sonesson gave McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan their first loss at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, and Cal Poly's Marco Comuzzo/Sebastian Bell defeated Bots and Matt Stith, 8-5, in the No. 3 match.
The Huskies will be back on the court next Friday, Feb. 4, to face Denver with a 5 p.m. start time.
