STANFORD, Calif. -- The nine Pac-10 and 12 Southeastern Conference women's golf teams who gathered for the final round of the inaugural Pac-10/SEC Challenge at Stanford Golf Course on Sunday were hammered by rain storms throughout the day.
The weather suited the NW-tested Husky golf team - who were 14-over par and tied for sixth after 36 holes - fine, but they were unable to take advantage. Washington's five golfers combined to shoot a 24-over 308 and ended up tied for ninth-place with No. 4 ranked California at +36.
"It was a disappointing day today. We just didn't handle the conditions very well," said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "But, it was a good week overall. We've got some things to work on before spring, but overall, not too shabby."
The tournament featured many of the NCAA's best squads, including seven teams ranked among Golfstat.com's top-10 and 12 top-25 teams overall. Washington, ranked No. 30, more than held its own, beating or tying seven teams ranked higher than them, including No. 1 LSU.
No. 5 UCLA ended up winning the tournament by 11 strokes after firing an 856 (+4). Third-ranked Alabama was second at +15, followed by No. 2 USC (+23). Arizona was fourth (+25), with Auburn (5th, +27), Stanford and Georgia (T6th, +30) and Tennessee (8th, +34).
USC's Sophia Popov claimed individual medalist honors after shooting a 6-under 207. Popov entered Sunday tied for fifth, but her 4-under 67 on Sunday helped her rally for a one-stroke victory over UCLA's Stephanie Kono.
Husky freshman Kelli Bowers entered the final round tied for ninth at -1 and in position for a great end to her fall season. Unfortunately, the Chelan, Wash. native struggled and shot a 9-over 80 that ended up not counting towards the team total. Bowers was still able to end up leading the Husky quintet with a 21st place overall finish at +8 (70-71-80-221) overall.
The two Husky seniors ended up handling the conditions best. Karinn Dickinson shot a 3-over 74 and Anya Alvarez a 5-over 76. Each ended up shooting a 222 (+9) and tying for 24th overall out of 108 competitors.
Junior Sadena Parks and freshman A Ram Choi each shot a 79 on Sunday. Parks ended up tied for 50th at +14 and Choi tied for 65th at +18.
The Huskies will spend the next three months training and practicing until they open the spring-portion of their schedule on Feb. 7 at the Arizona Invitational.
