PULLMAN, Wash. - A goal by Kate Deines in the 62nd minute put the Huskies on top early but Washington State rallied to score late and take the game in overtime for the 2-1 victory over the Huskies on Friday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
The Huskies end the regular season at 11-8-1 and 4-5 in the Pac-10 still with hopes of making the NCAA Tournament. For Washington State, the Cougars' season is over with a 7-13 overall record and 2-7 record in the league.
"We had chances early but we weren't sharp," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "WSU pressed well and we didn't play with rhythm. Time stopped twice in OT and slowed things up. We have to get mentally tougher if we are able to make the tournament."
Deines, a junior from Issaquah, Wash., scored on a free kick just across midfield that was bobbled by the WSU goalkeeper and went in. It's the ninth goal of the season for Deines, a team-high. She is now tied for ninth in school history for goals in a single-season.
Micaela Castain tied up the game in 84th minute for the Cougars on an assist by Eileen Maes. The ball went off of the left post off of a header pass from 10 yards out.
The game headed to OT where the Dawgs saw senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) take three shots on goal in the first three minutes but it was the Cougars that put the ball in the net.
Castain scored her second goal of the game, the game-winner in the 99th minute of the first overtime period. It was unassisted as she dribbled past two defenders on the left and shot to the far post.
The Huskies took 13 shots in the game, seven on goal, led by Waitley with three. WSU took 10 shots, six on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) made four saves in the match.
Washington State has not lost to UW in Pullman since 1996 and has won or tied all matches in the series since 2003.
The Huskies will await the 2010 NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 1:30 p.m. PST on ESPNU to see if they get in and where they are going in the NCAA Tournament. UW had made the second round of the past two NCAA Tournaments.
