TULSA, Okla. - It was up to senior Tobi Obenaus to kick off the 2010-11 Husky men's tennis season as the ITA All-American Championship pre-qualifying rounds took place this weekend at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Obenaus picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, before losing a tight three-setter on Sunday in the third pre-qualifying round.
Obenaus, coming off an excellent junior season in which he led the team with 24 singles wins, defeated Beau Bernstein of Texas-Pan American in the first round by a 6-2, 6-4 count. He came back later in the day to defeat Ohio State's Wyatt Lippert, 6-1, 6-1. Lippert had received a first round bye.
On Sunday, Obenaus faced New Mexico State's Arthur Surreaux, one of the No. 9-16 seeds in the draw. Surreaux took the first set, 6-1, but Obenaus came back to take the second, 6-4, and force a third. Surreaux hung on for the 6-4 third set win. Surreaux had recently won the Baylor Intercollegiate, upsetting 22nd-ranked Jeff Dadamo of Texas A&M in the process.
