TUSLA, Okla. - Washington's top returning men's tennis players both opened up their fall seasons with victories today, as qualifying play began at the ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and sophomore Kyle McMorrow will look to win twice more over the next two days in order to reach the main draw.
Nedunchezhiyan, ranked 54th entering his senior season, is the ninth overall seed in the qualifying draw, which features 128 players vying for 16 spots into the main draw of the first major tournament of the college tennis season. In his first round match today at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, Nedunchezhiyan handled Matt Hogan of Arkansas, 6-2, 7-5.
The 2009-10 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, McMorrow started his sophomore season off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Roberto Maytin of Baylor. In Tuesday's second round, McMorrow will face Sebastian Carlsson of LSU, one of the (24-32)-seeded players. Nedunchezhiyan will take on Julien Uriguen of Virginia in his second match.
McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan will also start play in the qualifying doubles draw on Tuesday.
