TUSLA, Okla. - Husky standouts Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan had another excellent day in the qualifying draws at the ITA All-American Championships, both moving one win away from the main draw in singles as well as doubles.
The first major of the college tennis season and by far the largest, UW's top two returners both won their second singles matches in as many days in the qualifying draw at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. With one more win apiece on Wednesday, they will advance to the 64-player main draw. As a doubles tandem, Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow also picked up two wins today to move one match away from the main doubles draw as well.
Neither of the Husky pair has lost a set thus far. McMorrow, ranked No. 119 in the preseason, was facing 78th-ranked Sebastian Carlsson of LSU, and knocked off the higher-ranked player, 6-1, 6-3. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native will now face another Sebastian, Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine, the fifth-seed in the draw, for the right to continue on in the main draw.
Nedunchezhiyan, looking to make the main draw for the first time in his final season, made quick work of Virginia's Julen Uriguen, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The nine seed in the qualifying draw, Nedunchezhiyan will now play Chris Mengel of Duke.
As a doubles duo, McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan are ranked 25th in the preseason poll, and looked the part today with two wins in qualifying. They opened with an 8-6 win over Michael Nuesslein and Christian Saravia of Rice, then handled Will Beck and Patrick Daciek of Virginia Tech, 8-4, to reach the third round. The Huskies can reach the main doubles draw with a win tomorrow against Ohio State's McCarthy and Novak, with first serve scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central.
