PORTLAND, Ore. - The UW women's soccer team (7-3-1) played one of its best games of the season, but fell in the final minute of double overtime at No. 4 Portland (12-1-0), 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field.
Junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) put the Dawgs on top of the Pilots in the sixth minute with her second goal of the season. It was a header off of a corner kick by freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.). It was the third assist of the season for Elston, a team-high.
The Huskies took that lead into halftime and shutout Portland until the 82nd minute with the Pilots' freshman Amanda Frisbie tied the game. The goal came five yards out on the left side after a short cross by Micaela Capelle.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Pilots rallied to take the game in the 109th minute on a penalty kick by Sophie Schmidt. The PK came after a yellow card on Huskies' senior Jane Mitchell (San Diego, Calif.).
Portland took more total shots than UW (13-7) but all seven of the Husky shots were on goal. Martinez led the way with three shots for UW. The Huskies led the way in corner kicks (9-6).
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) made four saves in goal. Her record is 4-3-1.
"Our team played the best we could today," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "It's unfortunate that we gave up a goal late. Sarah scored a great goal from Lindsay early and we really took control in the first half. Portland came out firing in the second half and got that goal. In overtime, it went back and forth and both keepers made some great saves. It looked like it was going to be a draw and it deserved to be a draw. Portland is a great team and our team did a great job of possessing the ball and our freshmen held their own against a team that moves as well as Portland. Our team did everything we asked them too but we just came up short. Regardless of the result, the game itself is a great way to head into conference play next weekend. If we can play this well every week I think we will get a lot of good results. We are disappointed but super proud of our team."
The Huskies open Pac-10 played next weekend at Husky Soccer Stadium, hosting Arizona on Friday at 5 p.m. and Arizona State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
