Top-Seeded Huskies Move On At NW Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif. - High-seeded Huskies Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Kyle McMorrow breezed through their third round singles matches to make the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. The two also advanced in the main doubles draw.
Qualification for the ITA National Indoor Championships is the prize at stake for the final 16 singles players and doubles teams out of the region, which encompasses Washington, Oregon, and most Northern California schools. Play continues through Tuesday.
Nedunchezhiyan, ranked 54th nationally and seeded third at this tourney, made quick work of Gonzaga's Zhia Hwa Chong in the third round, winning 6-1, 6-1. He will face Santa Clara's Kyle Dandan at 11 a.m. Sunday. Sixth-seeded Kyle McMorrow, ranked 119th, also rolled in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Toki Sherbakov of UC Davis. McMorrow has Lucas Tirelli of St. Mary's up next. Should the Huskies win their openers, they would also play their quarterfinal matches on Sunday.
The two also had an 8-2 win in their first doubles match of the weekend after receiving a first round bye. They moved to the round of 16 with an 8-2 win over Eischen and Ismath of Gonzaga.
Senior Tobi Obenaus and Skyler Tateishi were knocked out of the singles draw in the third round today, while Obenaus and Kildahl lost a tough 8-6 decision in the second round of doubles play to Cal's McLachlan and Katsarov.
Husky freshman Max Manthou earned the first true win of his college career today in the consolation singles draw. Manthou technically got a win on Friday when his first round opponent defaulted. He then fought gamely on court number one against Stanford senior Greg Hirshman before falling 6-2, 7-5. But Manthou battled back today for a win over Oregon's Aaron Clissold, pulling out the first set 7-6 (7) and then turning in a 6-2 second set win.
