PALO ALTO, Calif. - Three Husky men's tennis players held their seeds and one Husky provided one of the upsets of the day as day one of the ITA Northwest Regionals came to a close at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford campus. Senior Skyler Tateishi knocked off a seeded player for his second win of the day to join seniors Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Tobi Obenaus, and sophomore Kyle McMorrow in the round of 32.
The senior from Bellevue had one of the best wins of his career this afternoon as he upended Fresno State's David Ayoun, one of the No. 17-seeds in the tourney. Tateishi pulled out the lengthy first set in a tiebreak, 7-4, and then doggedly closed out the win with a 6-2 second set victory. That was on the heels of a 6-3, 6-2 win earlier in the day over Yousel El Bouzkouri of St. Mary's.
Nedunchehziyan, McMorrow, and Obenaus all earned first round byes, so they took the courts for the first time in the afternoon. Nedunchezhiyan, the No. 3 seed, came back from a break down in his first set to beat Fresno State's Nick Papac, 7-5, 6-2. Seeded sixth, McMorrow dominated Zach Jiganti of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-0, and Obenaus, seeded No. 9, took care of Michel Hukwo of Portland, 6-4, 6-0.
Freshman Max Manthou of Tacoma, the four-time Washington State Champion, had to wait a little longer than expected to make his debut. His first round opponent defaulted, so Manthou opened up with a very tall order, facing 8th-seeded Stanford senior Greg Hirshman on the No. 1 show court. After some opening game nerves, Manthou played impressively, pushing Hirshman in a long second set before ultimately going down 6-2, 7-5.
Junior Matt Stith won his first round match with ease, beating UC Davis' Jack Horowitz, 6-2, 6-1, but he ran into 9th-seeded Rikus DeVilliers of Fresno State in round two and was ousted, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Martin Kildahl, seeded 17th, started well against Steven Dawson of St. Mary's but ran into trouble and lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Singles play continues Saturday and the consolation singles bracket and the main doubles bracket begin as well.
