TUCSON, Ariz. - Kyle Conley tied the UW career home runs record in an unexpected fashion Sunday as his inside-the-park homer highlighted a four-run seventh inning, but Arizona scored six runs in the eighth to erase a 7-4 Husky lead and beat the UW, 10-7, Sunday night at Jerry Kindall Field.
Conley, a junior from Richland, tied the school record with his 42nd career home run, equaling the total set by Ed Erickson (1997-2000). It was his 19th of the season.
The Dawgs dropped under .500 with the loss as they're now 25-26 overall and 13-10 in the Pac-10, alone in fourth place. Arizona improved to 26-24 and 9-14.
The Huskies entered the seventh inning trailing 4-3. David Bentrott led off with a single and, after an out, he scored on a triple from Pierce Rankin.
After Rankin gave the UW a 5-4 lead by scoring on a double from Jake Rife, Conley lofted a ball to deep right. Right fielder Brad Glenn was unable to make an over-the-shoulder catch at the fence and ball caromed off of Glenn into the corner, allowing Conley to round the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park homer.
But in the eighth, with two runs already in to close the gap to 7-6, an RBI single from Bryce Ortega drove in Dwight Childs to tie it at 7-7. After the Pac-10's leading hitter, Dillon Baird, was intentionally walked to load the bases, Rafael Valenzuela's pinch-hit single drove in the go-ahead run. Arizona tacked on two more.
UA reliever Bryce Bandilla (3-2) worked an inning for the victory while Husky closer Brian Pearl (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in his inning of work. Jason Stoffel pitched a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save.
Arizona opened the scoring in the second when Glenn and Steve Selsky opened the inning with back-to-back solo homers, giving the Wildcats and early 2-0 lead.
The Huskies got on the board for the first time in the third thanks to a two-out, RBI triple from left fielder Brendan Gardner-Young that cut the lead to 2-1.
In the fourth, Rife singled and scored on a two-out double from third baseman Aaron Russell, tying the score at 2-2.
The UW took its first lead in the sixth when Russell belted a two-out triple and then scored on a single from Brett Wilcox, putting the Huskies on top, 3-2.
However, Arizona answered quickly. Glenn opened the bottom of the sixth with his second leadoff, solo homer of the night to tie it. Then, after a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt and a single, Childs drove in another run with a bunt single, giving the Wildcats a 4-3 edge.
After the Huskies took back the lead with the four-run seventh, Arizona drew closer in the eighth when Selsky led off with a triple and scored on a pinch-hit single from Mike Weldon.
The series ends Monday with a noon game. Subscribers can listen to a live broadcast on the Dawg Channel at gohuskies.com.
