RENO, Nev. - A two-run homer from Tyson Jaquez in the sixth inning led Nevada to a 3-2 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday at Peccole Park.
The Wolf Pack (3-7) broke a five-game losing streak with the victory while the Huskies (5-6) saw their string of three straight wins snapped.
The Huskies had a shot in the ninth as Brett Wilcox led off with a double. But, after closer Sammy Miller fanned the next two batters, the game ended when, on a infield single to shortstop, pinch runner Brendan Gardner-Young was tagged out on a throw from short after rounding third. Miller picked up his second save.
Senior lefty Tyler Cheney (1-1) suffered the loss. He worked five and one-third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Nevada starter Brock Stassi (2-1) picked up the win, surrendering two runs on seven hits over six and one-third.
Nevada took advantage of a three-base error to open the scoring in the third inning. With one out, Westley Moss hit a fly ball that was dropped by UW center fielder Caleb Brown. Kevin Rodland followed with a single up the middle, scoring Moss from third to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Husky catcher Brett Wilcox led off by reaching on a bunt single. After moving to second on a groundout, he scored when Andy Bethel tripled past the glove of the diving Brett Hart in right field, scoring Wilcox to tie it at 1-1.
Washington went in front for the first time all afternoon in the sixth when junior designated hitter Ty Rasmussen led off with his first homer of the season, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
However, Nevada went back in front in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer from Jaquez.
