STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford baseball team scored in each of the first four innings and got a strong outing from starter Jeffrey Inman in a 13-3 win over Washington Friday at Sunken Diamond.
The Huskies fell to 9-13 overall and 0-1 in Pac-10 play in their conference opener while the Cardinal improved to 6-10 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
Inman, a preseason All-American who had struggled to this point in the season, worked seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, for the win to improve to 1-3.
UW starter Brian Pearl (0-2) suffered the loss in his second college start. He gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three and one-third innings.
After the Huskies went down in order in the top of the first, Stanford opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After a walk and a wild pitch put a runner at second, a double from Zach Jones drove in one. Jones then scored on a two-out single from Min Moon, giving the Cardinal a 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Cardinal added a third run on an RBI single from Colin Walsh. In the third, Toby Gerhart's two-out double plated another Stanford run to make it a 4-0 game and in the fourth, the Cardinal added a fifth on another RBI from Walsh.
Washington was held without a hit through the first four. In the fifth, the Huskies finally broke through as Troy Scott singled, moved up two bases on wild pitches and scored on a two-out single from Brett Wilcox, cutting the lead to 5-1.
Stanford put the game away with eigth runs in the seventh, an inning that was delayed nearly a half hour when an usher fell over the fence and onto the field near the Stanford dugout and required medical attention. A two-run triple from Jake Schlander and a Joey August grand slam were the big blows in the inning.
In the eighth, Husky freshman Caleb Brown belted a two-run, pinch-hit homer, the first of his college career.
The seires continues with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
