UCSB Knocks Off UW Baseball, 8-2

MINNEAPOLIS - UC Santa Barbara starter Mike Ford limited the Washington baseball team to two runs on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings as the Gauchos beat the Huskies, 8-2, Sunday on the final day of the Dairy Queen Classic in the Metrodome.
Ford (2-0) picked up the win for the Gauchos, who improved to 5-2 on the season. UW starter Jason Erickson (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) over his four and one-third innings. Washington dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
UCSB scored a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Robby Cummings doubled to the gap in right-center, scoring Matt Valaika all the way from first base.
The Gauchos added another in the third when a single from Ryan Cavan plated Brian Gump from second, making it 2-0. In the fourth, John DeAlba doubled and scored on a single from Cummings, increasing the UCSB advantage to 3-0.
UCSB broke through for three more in the fifth when Cavan singled and eventually scored on a single from Valaika. Cummings then followed with a single that, coupled with an error in left, allowed two more to score, increasing the lead to 6-0.
In the seventh, UCSB catcher Marty Mullins connected for his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to make it 8-0.
Washington broke through in the seventh for its first run. Kyle Conley reached when he fly ball to left was lost in the white fabric ceiling and fell for a double. After a single from Brett Wilcox, Conley scored on a double-play groundout.
In the eighth, Brendan Gardner-Young walked, moved to third on a pinch-hit single from Ty Rasmussen and scored on a Ford wild pitch.
Cummings finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI and Cavan had four hits to lead the Gauchos. Wilcox was the only UW player with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-3.
Next up for the Huskies is a home-opening, non-conference series vs. Oregon Tuesday and Wednesday at Husky Ballpark. Next weekend, the UW returns to the road for a three-game series vs. Nevada in Reno.
