STOCKTON, Calif. - Starter Nick Haughian threw six shutout innings and shortstop Pierce Rankin had a homer and three runs batted in as the Washington baseball team cruised to a 10-1 win over Pacific Friday in the first of a three-game series at Klein Family Field.
Haughian, a junior lefty from Marysville, picked up the win, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out eight. Pacific starter Cole Akins, a junior from Eastside Catholic High, gave up seven runs (five earned) over six and one-third innings in the loss.
The Huskies took a lead in the second as Kyle Conley singled, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a Joey Dunn groundout. In the third, designated hitter Ty Rasmussen's double down the left-field line drove in two runners to give the Huskies a 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth, with Dunn aboard after having been hit by a pitch, Rankin, a freshman from Shorecrest High, connected with his first career home run, a high fly ball over the left-field fence, increasing the lead to 5-0.
In the seventh, the UW added to its total as an RBI single from Conley and a sacrifice fly from Troy Scott. In the eighth, Aaron Russell and Rankin opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. After Rankin scored on a wild pitch, Bradley Boyer hit a long, towering home run to left, his second of the year.
In the eighth, Tigers pinch hitter Noah St. Urbain was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to break up the UW's shutout bid.
The UW improved to 3-3 with the win while Pacific fell to 1-4.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 12 noon first pitch Sunday. Fans can catch live audio of all the weekend's games for no charge at gohuskies.com.
