SEATTLE - Sophomore Nick Haughian struck out seven batters in six innings Tuesday night as the Washington baseball team built and early lead and then hung on for a 6-3 win over Portland in the first game of a two-game series at Husky Ballpark.
Haughian, a lefty from Marysville, allowed one run on four hits for the win, improving to 4-6 on the season. Portland starter Given Kutz (5-5) allowed six runs on eight hits over three innings in the loss.
Washington (24-21) jumped out to an early lead in the first. After Michael Burgher walked and stole second to open the game, Danny Cox tripled to send him home. Right fielder Matt Hague followed with his 10th home run of the season to stake the UW with a 3-0 lead. The homer extended Hague's hitting streak to 17 games.
Husky freshman third baseman Brian Pearl led off the second inning with his third homer of the year, increasing the lead to 4-0. The Huskies continued to score in the third as Curt Rindal doubled and scored on a Joey Lind groundout and Ty Rasmussen singled and eventually crossed the plate on a single from Brett Wilcox.
Portland (19-24) plated its first run in the sixth. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk, a one-out groundout from Danny Meier pushed one across. The Pilots added two more in the seventh as an Eric Brown groundout and a sacrifice fly from Chase Powell drove in runs.
UW closer Nick Hagadone came on in the eighth and got the final six batters in order to pick up his ninth save of the season.
The Huskies and Pilots wrap up their season series Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
