TEMPE, Ariz.-- The 10th-ranked University of Washington softball team (17-4) split a pair of games Saturday at the Pac-10/Big XII Face-Off, defeating Missouri 5-1 in the opener before falling to Texas Tech 3-2 after a seventh inning rally by the Red Raiders.
Washington avenged yesterday's extra-inning loss to Missouri with a 5-1 victory over the Tigers this morning. The Huskies scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by senior Dena Tyson. The hit scored All-American Ashley Charters who has reached base on an error and marked Tyson's eighth home run of the season.
Junior Caitlin Noble kept the Missouri hitters off balance, giving up just two hits through six innings-- singles to Amanda Renth in the first and fourth frames-- and striking out three.
The Huskies scored three insurance runs in the sixth inning on four consecutive hits. Charters sparked the rally with a single up the middle and sophomore Marnie Koziol followed with an infield single. All-American Dominique Lastrapes then belted an RBI-double to right-centerfield to score Charters. The Tigers intentionally walked Tyson to load the bases and sophomore Alicia Matthews followed with a two-run single through the left side to put Washington on top, 5-0.
Missouri attempted to stage its second comeback victory in as many days over the Huskies in the seventh inning, loading the bases on a single and two walks before Allison Kennewell hit an infield single to put the Tigers on the scoreboard, 5-1. Noble got out of the inning with a pop-up to seal the UW victory.
Noble (6-1) picked up the win as she held Missouri to one run on four hits and struck out four.
In the nightcap vs. Texas Tech, Washington lost a 3-2 heartbreaker as the Red Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs.
The Huskies struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first on three hits. Charters led off with a single to centerfield and scored on a triple by Koziol to right-center. The hit extended Koziol's hit streak to 14 games, tying her career record, while Charters pushed her hitting streak to 11 games.
Texas Tech got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Jennifer Corkin hit a leadoff home run over the left-centerfield wall to cut Washington's lead to 2-1.
The score held firm until the bottom of the seventh when Devin Zaragoza hit a two-out double to left-center and Montana Patin followed with a single up the middle. Washington intentionally walked Corkin to face Whitney Riley who had struck out in her first three at-bats. Riley hit a flare to the right side just out of reach of a diving Lastrapes. Two runs scored on the play to give Texas Tech the 3-2 upset victory.
Noble (6-2) took the tough loss as she allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight.
Ashley Jacobs (11-6) earned the win as she gave up two runs on six hits and struck out seven.
Washington rounds out tournament action tomorrow with a game at 10 a.m. against either Missouri or Texas Tech.
