PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore forward Melissa Beal scored the first two goals and assisted on the fourth Sunday, lifting Washington to a 4-0 victory over Baylor in the final round of the Portland Invitational women's soccer tournament at Merlo Field.
The Huskies (4-2), who finished third in the tournament, tallied four goals for the first time since Nov. 12, 2004 when they beat Birmingham Southern 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. UW has compiled nine goals, surpassing its entire 2005 season output of eight. Baylor's record dropped to 1-4-1.
Senior Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) stopped two Bear shots before being replaced in the 74th minute by red-shirt freshman Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.). UW's backup goalkeeper blocked a penalty kick as time expired for her only save, preserving the team's third shutout. The Baylor penalty shot was awarded after a Husky was whistled for a hand ball in the box.
"Taylor made a good save," UW associate head coach Amy Griffin described. "She guessed right and had to leave a little bit early and she made a good save. The rebound went right to another Baylor player, but she wasn't able to finish it."
Beal (Portland, Ore.) scored in the 35th minute, giving UW a lead it maintained through halftime. She collected a poor clearance attempt from a Baylor defender and scored from inside the box at 36:38.
"Melissa goes for the goal and is very composed," remarked Griffin. "On the first one the ball bounced around and when it popped out to her in a huge crowd she had the ability to take a touch away from the pressure. Once we score a goal, we seem to start playing a lot better."
Beal struck again 19 minutes into the second half on a breakaway. She sent the ball into right corner of the goal from 10 yards away after receiving a through pass from Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma). That was the third goal of the season for Beal, who had a team-high four last year.
Sophomore midfielder Jenna Robison (Livermore, Calif.) netted the Huskies' third goal, confidently converting a penalty kick at 69:33.
Junior forward Katy Dowling (Laguna Beach, Calif.) capped the scoring at 69:33, driving a 12-yard shot into the right corner. Beal and Shuree Hyatt were credited with assists on the play.
Goalkeeper Ashley Holder posted five saves for the Bears, who were outshot 20-6 by UW.
Washington continues its four-game road trip next weekend in Columbus, Ohio. UW plays Dayton on Friday and the host Buckeyes on Sunday as part of the four-team Ohio State Tournament.
