LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team fell behind early and couldn't come back despite home runs from Zach Clem, Matt Stevens and Brett Kaluza in a 15-8 loss to No. 22 USC Saturday at Dedeaux Field.
USC (23-17 overall, 9-5 in the Pac-10) evened the series at one win apiece with the victory. Washington fell to 26-15 and 5-6. Before the game, USC hosted a memorial salute to legendary head coach Rod Dedeaux, who passed away in January.
After the Trojans scored a run in the first, the Huskies drew even on a home run from Kaluza, the freshman center fielder's first as a Husky.
However, in the second, the Trojans scored eight runs on five hits, one error, a hit batter and two walks. Matt Cusick's two-run single got the rally started and put USC in front for good.
After a three-run third inning, the Trojans led 12-1. Washington got one back in the top of the fourth on Stevens' 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
In the seventh, the Huskies added four more, two on a two-run single from Matt Hague and two more on a homer from Clem, his Pac-10-leading 16th of the season.
Starter Kyle Parker (3-1) suffed the loss. In an inning-plus, he gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks. Reliever Tyler Cheney, who came on in relief in the third inning, went the rest of the way, allowing three runs over five and two-thirds.
Trojan freshman starter Tommy Milone (7-0) kept his perfect won-lost record in tact. He threw seven innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Husky first baseman Curt Rindal finished the day 4-for-5 with two runs batted in . Hague and Ryan Anderson also each had three hits for Washington.
USC second baseman Blake Sharpe went 4-for-4 while Cusick, Cyle Hankerd and Hector Estrella each added two hits.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the series Sunday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live in the Seattle area at KKNW AM-1150.
