HONOLULU - A ninth-inning, pinch-hit triple from freshman Bradley Boyer broke a 7- 7 tie and led the Washington baseball team to an 8-7 win over Hawaii in the second game of two vs. the Rainbows Saturday and the final game of the Rainbow Baseball Tournament.
The game, scheduled for seven innings as the second game of a doubleheader, was won in the ninth inning.
Down 7-5 entering the seventh inning, Hawaii tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run, pinch-hit single from Adam Roberts, a Mt. Vernon High graduate. The UW, who hadn't posted a hit since the first inning, scored in the ninth when Matt Stevens walked for the fourth time in the game and came around on Boyer's triple to the gap in left-center.
The UW (12-4) finished the tournament 3-2, good for second to tournament champion Arkansas, which finished 4-1. Hawaii, which beat the UW 10-8 in the first game Saturday, dropped to 13-6 on the year.
Washington used three Rainbows miscues and four hits in the first to score six runs. The first four Huskies in the inning reached on three singles and a walk. The third of those singles was a bases-loaded infield hit from Curt Rindal to open the scoring.
However, Hawaii starter Mark Rodrigues struck out the next two Huskies and looked to be out of the inning on a grounder to short from Joey Dunn. However, shortstop Nathan Young's throw to first was in the dirt and got past the first baseman, allowing two runs to score. The next hitter, Danny Cox, also grounded to short and again, Young's throw was errant, allowing two more to score. Senior Nick Burnham's clean single to right scored the sixth Husky run in the inning.
Hawaii answered with two in the bottom of the first, scroring on a sacrifice fly from Justin Frash and a double from Matt Inouye, cutting the Huskies lead to 6-2.
In the fourth, the Rainbows cut the lead to just one run, scoring three to make it 6-5. With two outs and two on, consecutive singles from Frash, Inouye and pinch hitter Luis Avila drove in one run each.
Washington scored a seventh run in the top of the fifth on Young's third error of the game, this time a fielding error that allowed Matt Stevens to score with two out.
Elliott Cribby, who entered the game in the fifth and closed it out, earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings. Keahi Rawlins (0-1), who surrendered just one run in three and one-third innings, took the loss.
The Huskies return to Seattle to begin an eight-game homestand, starting Tuesday with the first of two games vs. San Diego. Next weekend, Santa Clara visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game series. Live audio broadcasts and live stats of all of those games will be available at gohuskies.com.
