HONOLULU - The Washington baseball team came back from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, but a two- run homer from Hawaii's Justin Frash in the seventh lifted the Rainbows to a 10-8 win over the Huskies Saturday in the first of two games between the two teams at Les Murikami Stadium.
Junior catcher Matt Lane, who an inning earlier drove in the Huskies' first two runs with a bases-loaded single, gave the Huskies their first lead at 6-5 with a two-out single in the seventh. Lane finished 3-for-5 with four runs batted in.
However, Hawaii got a two-run homer from Frash in the seventh inning to go back on top, 7-6. Frash's homer was his second of the season and just the fifth all year for the Rainbows.
After the Rainbows scored three in the eighth to extend their lead to 10-6, the UW rallied in the ninth, scoring two runs on a single from Lane and a double from Andy Lentz, whose pinch-hit homer in the sixth had tied the game at 5-5. However, with runners at second and third, Matt Stevens grounded out to end the game. Lentz went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 11-4 on the year while Hawaii improved to 13-5. The result also meant that the Rainbow Baseball Tournament championship went to Arkansas, which earlier in the day beat Texas-Arlington to finish 4-1 in the tournament.
UW freshman starter Tyler Cheney suffered the loss for to fall to 1-1. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits over six-plus innings of work. Hawaii reliever Darrell Fisherbaugh (2-0), who gave up the single to Lane, picked up the victory.
After getting a run in the first, the Rainbows stretched their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the third. First baseman Luis Avila, who'd driven in the run in the first with a sacrifice fly, singled to send home the first run of the third. Matt Inouye followed with a run scoring single and Jorge Franco singled to send home another. Second baseman Eli Christensen's RBI single later in the inning capped the scoring.
The Huskies, however, rallied for five runs in the sixth. Lane drove in the first two with a bases-loaded single. Then, with right-handed reliever Matt Daly on in relief of Hawaii starter Ian Harrington, Lentz pinch hit for Brett Kaluza. Lentz lined a home run down the line and just inside the foul pole, a three-run shot that tied the game at 5-5.
The Huskies return to Seattle to begin an eight-game homestand, starting Tuesday with the first of two games vs. San Diego. Next weekend, Santa Clara visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game series. Live audio broadcasts and live stats of all of those games will be available at gohuskies.com.
