NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Tim Lincecum broke the UW career strikeout record and Matt Lane drove in five runs as the Washington baseball team opened a four-game series at Cal State Northridge with a 7-3 win Friday.
Lincecum, pitching in just the second game of his third season at the UW, broke the record of 303, set by All-American Jeff Heaverlo between 1997 and 1999. Lincecum entered the day needing seven more Ks to move past Heaverlo. He broke the mark in the third when he fanned shortstop Jonathan Sakurai to end the inning.
"It wasn't that big of a deal when I was still in the game," Lincecum said of breaking the record," but it was a pretty good surprise when I was done. I'm really happy about it."
Linecum (1-0) tied his career high with 15 Ks in the game, as he struck out three in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Over his six innings of work, he surrendered one run on three hits while walking four.
Lane, the Huskies' junior catcher from Port Angeles, went 2-for-5 with five RBI, driving in the Huskies' first five runs with a homer and a single.
Washington (3-1) got off to a quick start in the first inning. With Jake Rife and Matt Hague aboard with two outs, Lane blasted his second homer of the year to right field, staking the Huskies with a 3-0 lead.
Lane did more damage in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, he bounced a single through the right side of the infield to send home two more runs. First baseman Curt Rindal followed with an RBI groundout and the Huskies led, 6-0.
Northridge's best early threat off of Lincecum came in the fourth. After a single and a walk to start the inning, Lincecum struck out Kris Kasarjian. However, a walk loaded the bases before Lincecum fanned two more to end the inning.
In the sixth, Matadors right fielder Brett Blumenthal led off with a homer to score CSUN's first run. After the Huskies scored their seventh run in the seventh, Northridge posted two more in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the Husky lead to 7-3.
Northridge continued to threaten in the eight as the first two batters of the inning were hit by a pitch. However, Husky closer Elliott Cribby came on to end the rally, pitching the final two innings for his second save of the season.
Matadors ace Craig Baker (2-1) suffered the loss. He allowed six Husky runs on five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out eight. CSUN fell to 6-4 with the loss.
The Huskies and Matadors continue the four-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. A live audio broadcast will be available on the Dawg Channel at gohuskies.com.
