Diamond Dawgs Bounce Back With 5-3 Win at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Four Husky pitchers combined for four innings of no-hit relief as the Washington baseball team rebounded from a tough loss Friday to beat New Mexico State, 5-3, Saturday at Presley Askew Field.
Washington (1-1) lost an eight-run lead in Friday's 12-11, 11-inning loss, but worked out of several tough spots Saturday to preserve the win.
"I think the guys knew it was sort of a fluke," Husky coach Ken Knutson said of Friday's loss. "We addressed it. I told them that in my career, I don't think we'd given up an eight-run lead in the eighth inning. They had a good, even keel today and played well."
Junior Kyle Parker (1-0) earned the win for the Huskies, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four. NMSU starter Tyler Sturdevant (1-1), a former closer making his first start, went the distance in the loss, allowing five runs on 12 hits and one walk while striking out six.
NMSU (3-3) left a total of 11 runners on base, including 10 in scoring position. In each of the four innings prior to the ninth, the Aggies got at least one runner to second base, via walk or error, but in each case, couldn't score.
In the seventh, sophomore lefty Nick Hagadone came on in relief with runners at second and third an two outs and struck out pinch hitter Derek Maytubby to end the threat. In the eighth, with a runner at second, freshman Nick Haughian walked the first batter he faced to put runners at first and second, but fanned Brandon Lance to end the inning.
Haughian, from Marysville-Pilchuck High, threw a perfect ninth to earn his first college save. He walked one and struck out two in one and one-third innings.
"I thought one of the main highlights of the game was Haughian's pitching," Knutson said. "I thought it was outstanding. He came on in a tight situation and threw some tough pitches."
The Aggies got the scoring started in the first. After Lance and Luke Hopkins reached on back-to-back, one-out bloop singles, DH Adam Harvey doubled down the left-field line, driving in both baserunners to give NMSU a 2-0 lead.
Washington got on the board in the second when first baseman Curt Rindal led off with a home run to left field. In the NMSU third, Lance reached again on a popup that dropped just behind the mound between four Husky infielders. After a walk, a single from Jason Rodriguez drove in the Aggie's third run.
The Huskies broke through for their first lead, scoring three in the fifth on the strength of five singles. With Danny Cox and Ryan Anderson aboard with one out, Andy Lentz, Matt Hague and Zach Clem each singled, driving in a run with each hit to give Washington a 4-3 lead.
Washington scored its fifth run in the ninth when Anderson led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Hague and Anderson each finished the game with three hits.
