SEATTLE - Husky ace Tim Lincecum threw a one-hit complete game, striking out 11, as the Washington baseball team beat California, 5-1, Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three- game, Pac-10 series. The game got underway about an hour later than scheduled due to rain.
Lincecum held the Golden Bears hitless until an RBI double from Brennan Boesch with one out in the seventh. To that point, he'd allowed only two Cal baserunners, both on walks. He finished the game having allowed one run on one hit while walking three to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Lincecum out-dueled Cal's Adam Gold (5-4), who nearly matched him until the UW exploded for four runs in the seventh. Gold allowed five runs on six hits over six and two-thirds innings.
The win improved the UW's record to 22-13 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10 while the Golden Bears fell to 23-15 and 5-5 in the league.
After neither team was able to do much at the plate in the early-going, the Huskies finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. Curt Rindal walked to lead off. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout put Rindal at second with two outs, shortstop Brent Lillibridge laced an 0-2 pitch to center for an RBI double, giving the UW a 1-0 edge.
Cal tied the score in the top of the seventh. Matt Einspahr walked and moved to second on a wild pitch and, with one out, Boesch lined a double down the right-field line for the Bears' first hit and run of the game.
Washington answered back quickly, however. Rindal singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. After a bunt moved him to second, senior second baseman Mike Rundle broke the 1-1 tie with a double to the gap in right-center field. Cory Rickard then dumped a single to shallow left, scoring Rundle to increase the UW lead to 3-1.
After Gold hit Zach Clem with a pitch, Matt Swanson came on in relief. After walk loaded the bases, Hague reached on an infield single to shortstop, scoring two as Clem never stopped running with two outs and scored all the way from second without a throw to the plate.
The Huskies and Bears play again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM- 1150. That radio broadcast, as well as live stats, is also available on the internet via gohuskies.com.
