SEATTLE - After having surrendered a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Washington baseball team scored one in the eighth to tie the score at 5-5 and then got an RBI single from Matt Lane in the ninth to complete a three-game sweep of Utah Valley State with an 6-5 win Tuesday afternoon at Husky Ballpark,
The Wolverines, down 4-1, rallied in the eighth off of Husky freshman reliever Matt Hague. After a pair of infield singles put two aboard, Trent Perry singled through the left side to drive in UVSC's second run of the game. Designated hitter Dan Bulow followed with his seventh home run of the season, over the wall in center field, to give the visitors a 5-4 lead.
Washington tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth when Taylor Johnson singled and eventually scored on a groundout from Zach Clem.
In the ninth, UW senior third baseman Nick Batkoski led off with a double to left field. With Michael Burgher in to run for Batkoski at second, the Wolverines brought in left- handed reliever Zach Coon to pitch to Lane, who singled down the right-field line to give the Huskies the win.
Hague (1-2) got the win while reliever Kyle Tash (1-5), who gave up Batkoski's double, took the loss.
The victory improved the Huskies' record to 17-10 and kept them a perfect 10-0 in home games this season. UVSC, a second-year Division I program, fell to 9-21.
The Huskies scored a run in the first when Batkoski walked with the bases loaded. In the second, they added two more on a two-run double from Johnson to move in front by a 3-0 score.
UW starting pitcher Emmanuel Pedroza, a walk-on junior making his first career appearance, held the Wolverines hitless through the first three and one-third innings. However, a single from Canyon Vance, a double from Perry and a walk to Bulow loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Pedroza then forced in a run when he walked Brad Hales before being relieved by senior Josh Conover.
Conover, who got a popout and a strikeout to end the threat in the fourth, went on to throw three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Pedroza, a lefty from Mabton, Wash., finished having allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four over three for one-third innings.
Husky freshman Andy Lentz, who went 3-for-4, hit a one-out solo home run in the sixth, the first of his college career, to increase the Washington lead to 4-1.
The Huskies play their first home Pac-10 series of the season this weekend vs. USC. Friday's 6:30 p.m. game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
