TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona's Jeff Van Houten led off the 12th inning with a home run to lift the 13th-ranked Wildcats to a 6-5 win over Washington Friday at Kindall Field.
The Wildcats (18-9 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-10) had rallied for two runs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Arizona first baseman Jordan Brown, who had homered to lead off the eighth inning, very nearly won the game in the ninth when his would-be grand slam down the right-field line was ruled foul. However, with two outs and the bases loaded, he came through, driving in two with a double that tied the game at 5-5.
Husky freshman Matt Hague (0-2) suffered the loss. He'd retired all six batters he'd faced before surrendering the homer in the 12th. Husky starter Kyle Parker threw nine innings and had the Wildcats down to their final strike on more than one occasion, but could complete the win.
Arizona reliever Mark Melancon (1-2) threw five innings for the win, allowing only one run on two hits.
Washington dropped to 13-10 overall and 0-2 in Pac-10 play after having lost to Arizona, 13-6 on Thursday.
Arizona got off to a quick start with a pair of runs in the first. After Trevor Crowe and Brad Boyer singled to open the inning, a pair of RBI groundouts from Jeff Van Houten and Jordan Brown staked the Wildcats with a 2-0 edge.
Washington was held hitless until Zach Clem singled to lead off the fourth. After Kyle Larsen walked, Nick Batkoski singled to drive in the Huskies' first run. After an out, freshman Matt Stevens drove in Larsen from third with a sacrifice fly, knotting the score at 2-2.
The UW took its first lead in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded on a single and two walks, Stevens blooped a single to left to drive in Larsen with the go-ahead run. Arizona threatened to tie the score or go in front in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Parker got Bryan Kervin to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the Huskies in the lead at 3-2.
Larsen added the Huskies' lead in the eighth when he led off the inning with his fourth home run of the year. In the bottom of the eighth, Brown led off with his eighth of the year, cutting the UW lead to 4-3.
Sunday's game time has been moved forward one hour and will now get underway at 11:00 a.m. PST. The series finale will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
