IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine scored six runs in the first inning, including four on a grand slam from shortstop Chad Lundahl, and cruised to an 8-3 win over eighth-ranked Washington in the second game of a doubleheader at Anteater Ballpark. UCI won the first game, 6-3.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 0-2 on the season while UC Irvine improved to 4-1.
The Anteaters had already taken a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI double from third baseman Matt Anderson and a balk that sent a runner home from third. With two down, Irvine loaded the bases before Lundahl, a sophomore, belted his first career home run, driving the ball over the right-field fence to give his team a 6-0 edge.
Irvine went on to post single runs in the second and third innings to increase their lead to 8-0.
Husky starter Kyle Parker lasted only two innings and suffered the loss. The sophomore right-hander gave up seven runs (only two earned) on three hits over two innings. He also walked four batters and hit two.
UCI senior southpaw Glenn Swanson (1-0) earned the win with five-plus innings of work. After holding the UW scoreless on two hits through the fifth inning, he left in the sixth after allowing the first five Husky hitters to reach base.
In that sixth, Brent Lillibridge tripled to lead off. After Taylor Johnson walked, Nick Batkoski drove home Lillibridge with a single. A bloop single from Kyle Larsen loaded the bases and DH Curt Rindle singled to drive in two.
Michael Koehler, however, shut the door, coming on to relieve Swanson and retiring three straight Huskies to end the threat. Koehler went on to allow only one hit and no runs in four innings to earn his first save.
Lillibridge went 2-for-4 to lead the Husky hitters.
The series wraps up Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
