SEATTLE - Senior forward Ryan Johnson scored two goals and assisted two more, leading Oregon State to a 4-1 victory over Washington men's soccer in both teams' season finale at Husky Soccer Field, Sunday afternoon.
Washington took an early 1-0 lead on sophomore forward Ely Allen's fourth goal of the season in the 25th minute, but then proceeded to allow four unanswered goals by the Beavers. Both teams needed a win to better their chances for an at-large berth to the 48-team NCAA Tournament field, but neither OSU or Washington's names were called when bracket was announced Monday.
Washington finished the season with a 10-7-2 record, 3-5-2 in the conference. Oregon State finished the year 9-7-4 overall, 5-5 in the Pac-10.
Just two minutes after Allen gave Washington a lead, Ryan Johnson's first goal tied the game at one all in the 27th minute. Junior forward Bryan Jordan scored the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute, a five-yard shot that came after gathering the deflection of a saved shot by Johnson. Johnson struck again, scoring right at the 62-minute mark before recording one of two assists on the Beavers' final goal by senior Matt Johnson in the 78th minute.
The four goals allowed by Washington were a season-high and the most since a 5-3 loss versus Portland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. The Beavers even had a shot for a fifth goal, but a penalty kick attempt from Robbie Findley in the 73rd minute was stopped by a stellar save from UW senior goalkeeper Chris Eylander.
"I thought we were very tentative, especially in the defense," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "I thought they unsettled us. Our centerbacks and our defending have been the strength of our team all year. It's made our whole year because we've struggled to score. They (OSU) play with two very fleet-footed physical forwards. They took over control of the center of our defense. We looked tired and fatigued. We got out-hustled in every phase of play, there wasn't one area where we dominated. Our forwards couldn't get behind their backs. Their midfield kind of took charge and their forwards worked our backline."
Eylander, who will finish his career as one of the top goalkeepers to play in the Husky program, made five saves on the day, as did his counterpart Packy Deenihan for Oregon State.
The match marked the final home game for six Husky seniors, including midfielder Mike Chabala, midfielder Evan Cummings, midfielder Mike Cusenza, Eylander, midfielder Jeff Hoover and midfielder Leo Totev.
