Bend, OR - The seventh-ranked Washington women's golf team finished second at The Fall Preview, the top women's collegiate golf event of the fall. It was the Huskies best showing at the event, which featured the top-12 ranked teams in the country. Washington shot 3-over 287 during Wednesday's final round and placed six strokes behind third-ranked Duke. The Huskies finished the 54-hole event at 12-over 864. The Blue Devils claimed the championship with a score of 6-over 858. Washington and Duke entered the final round of play tied for first at nine-over.
"We played well, but Duke was able to make a few more putts than us today," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Overall we feel good about the finish. It is a huge advantage to play in this tournament and get four more trips around the course. Now the focus is getting back this spring."
The Meadows Course in Bend, Ore., site of the Fall Preview, will host the NCAA Women's Championships in May.
The Huskies were led at the Fall Preview by freshman Kim Shin from Mountlake Terrace. She shot 2-over 73 during the final round to tie for eighth overall at 3-over 215. It was Shin's first event as a Husky.
"I thought she did awesome in one of the best fields we'll see this year," Mulflur said. "She had one shot go out of bounds today and that cost her two strokes, but she bounced right back. I think this is the first of many great tournaments she'll have."
Husky junior All-American Paige Mackenzie rebounded from a rare non-counting score of 80 on Tuesday and shot 1-under 70. Mackenzie placed 21st at 5-over 218. Sophomore Ashley Bickerton, who posted even-par 71 during the final round, was 28th at 220. Sung Ea Lee was 32nd at 221 and Amber Prange was 35th at 222.
Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin shot 1-over 72 during the final round to win medalist honors at 7-under 206. Arizona State's Louise Stahle was second at 207 while Duke's Brittany Lang placed third at 209.
"Last year we finished on a really good note (sixth at NCAA Championships) and we've picked up right where we left off," Mulflur said. "It's a great start. Now, we just need to go out and get a little better each day and see what we can do when we come back in May."
The Huskies return to play Oct. 4-6 when they host the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club. Complete results of the Fall Preview can be found at golfstat.com
