Parker Leads Aloha (Ore.) To NBC Title

Kyle Parker threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Aloha (Ore.) Knights to a 7-0 win over the Mat-Su (Alaska) Miners in the championship game of the 70th annual National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan. Parker, a sophomore-to-be on the Washington baseball team, picked up his second win of the tournament as the Knights completed the 46-team national tournament with a perfect 7-0 record. It was the first NBC title for the Knights, a team based near Portland, Ore., and a member of the Pacific International League. Parker, from Yakima's West Valley High, allowed only five hits in his nine-inning victory. He walked two and struck out seven while facing only 32 batters in a game that lasted only an hour and 59 minutes. Mat-Su starter Matt Manship, who pitches for Stanford, took the loss. He struck out 10 in five and one-third innings, but allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits. Husky junior Zach Clem, also a member of the Knights, was 2-for-5 with a double in the title game while sophomore Matt Lane went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Kasser, a junior Husky pitcher, didn't play in the title game, but did pick up a victory in his lone start of the NBC World Series. The NBC World Series is the culmination of the summer season for many college and semi-pro players.
