OXFORD, Miss. - Tulane southpaw Brian Bogusevic threw eight and two-thirds innings and out- dueled Husky ace Tim Lincecum as the Green Wave handed the Washington baseball team a 3-2 loss in the opening game of the NCAA Oxford Regional at Swayze Field.
The second-seeded Huskies (37-19-1) must now win four straight games to win the regional. Saturday, the UW will face the winner of Friday night's game between Mississippi and Western Kentucky in a loser-out game at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. If the Huskies win that game, they'll take on the loser of the winners' bracket game Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
Bogusevic improved to 9-5 on the season with the victory. The sophomore, who also batted cleanup in the game, threw 142 pitches, allowing the two runs on eight hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out three.
Lincecum (10-3) allowed only four hits and struck out 10, but walked seven in his six and two- thirds innings of work. Two of those walks came around to score while another forced home a run with the bases loaded.
The Huskies mounted a two-out rally in the ninth as Nick Batkoski and Tyler Mach each singled, but Daniel Latham came on in relief of Bogusevic and got Ben Johnson to fly out to end the game. Latham earned his sixth save for Tulane (39-19).
Washington opened the game with a run in the first. Leadoff man Brent Lillibridge lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a single. After stealing second, he moved to third on a groundout. Zach Clem took called third strike for the second out, but Kyle Larsen laced a single through the right side, plating Lillibridge to give the Huskies the early 1-0 edge.
Tulane took advantage of a bout of wildness from Lincecum in the top of the second. Lincecum walked Greg Dini and Mark Hamilton to begin the inning. After a groundout moved both runners up, third baseman Brian Bormaster singled to center to send home two runs and give Tulane a 2-0 lead. The Green Wave would go on to load the bases with two down, but Lincecum struck out Matt Barket to strand the three runners.
The Huskies had their chances to draw even or take a lead as they put runners aboard in every inning. Most of those baserunners reached with two out, but the UW put two runners on with only one down in the sixth when Clem singled and Aaron Hathaway walked. Bogusevic got out of trouble, however, getting John Otness to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Wildness came into play again in the seventh as the Wave increased their advantage to 3-1. With two aboard on singles, Lincecum walked Dini to load the bases with two out and then forced in a run, walking third baseman Tim Guidry. Trent Baysinger came on in relief of Lincecum with the bases loaded and two down and got a great, over-the-shoulder catch in foul ground from third baseman Otness to end the seventh.
Washington closed the gap with a single run in the seventh, but might have had more if not for a great defensive play. Batkoski lined a double down the right-field line to open the inning and Mach drilled a line drive to center. As the ball looked headed for the wall, Tulane center fielder Nathan Southard made a spectacular diving catch, robbing extra bases. Batkoski, who moved to third on the out, scored on a groundout from Ben Johnson, cutting the Tulane lead to 3-2.
Mach finished the game 3-for-4 while Batkoski was 2-for-4. The Green Wave totaled only four hits in the game as Baysinger threw two and one-third perfect innings of relief.
Lincecum set a school record for strikeouts in an NCAA game. The old mark of nine was set by Daryl Burke in a loss to Fresno State in 1959.
All remaining UW games will air live on KKNW AM-1150, beginning with Saturday morning's elimination game.
