SEATTLE - John Otness went 4-for-5 with five runs batted in and Greg Isaacson, Aaron Hathaway , Kyle Larsen and Taylor Johnson notched three hits each as the 13th-ranked Washington baseball team rolled to a 20-4 non-conference win over Portland Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies, who have won 10 of their last 12, improved to 29-15-1 on the season while Portland dropped to 10-37. Washington posted 22 hits on the night as nine different players had a base hit and eight had an RBI.
UW sophomore Keaton Everitt (4-2), making his first start since March 27, got the win, working the five and one-third innings. The right-hander from Juanita High allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk while fanning three. Portland starter Jared Adams (1-6) lasted only a third of an inning in the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk.
The Huskies jumped on Portland from the start. Washington loaded the bases with no outs in the first and Kyle Larsen doubled to left to drive in a pair. After Nick Batkoski grounded out to drive in a run from third, Hathaway singled to send home Larsen, giving the UW a 4-0 lead after one.
The UW added three more in the third. With two aboard, Batkoski's hit-and-run single drove in one run and a two-run single from Otness made it 7-0.
Portland broke through with a run in the fifth. Justin Pierce reached on a ground-rule double to open the inning and scored on a Billy Krause single.
Washington erased all doubt with six runs in the fifth. A two-run double from Brent Lillibridge and a two-run single from Isaacson highlighted the inning whle Otness and Larsen each notched their third RBI of the day with singles.
After Portland tacked on two runs in the sixth on a Jeffrey Crinklaw RBI single and a throwing error from Lillibridge in center, Washington opened the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homer from Hathaway, his seventh of the season. Otness followed with a double and, after an out, scored on a double from Taylor Johnson. A two-out, bases-loaded error by UP third baseman Travis Vetters allowed two more to increase the UW lead to 17-3.
Senior catcher Ben Johnson, on to replace Hathaway, led off the seventh with his sixth homer of the year. Nik Kosach's RBI double in the ninth added Portland's fourth run.
Washington takes on Portland again Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. before travelling to USC for a three-game, Pac-10 series next weekend. Each of the upcoming four games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
