SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team, trailing throughout most of the game, rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and finished with a 6-6 tie against Missouri Sunday at Husky Ballpark in the final game of a three-game series. The game was called after 10 innings due to Missouri's travel plans and a pre-determined time limit.
The series ended all even as each team won one game and tied the third. Washington's record is now 7-4-1 while Missouri finished the weekend with an 11-3-1 season mark.
Down 6-4 entering the ninth, Aaron Hathaway got the rally started with a one-out single. After Greg Isaacson singled to put runners at the corners, he stole second. With Isaacson on the move, MU reliever Max Scherzer's pitch went wild, allowing Isaacson to move to third and Hathaway to score. John Otness followed with a single to right, driving home Isaacson to tie the score at 6-6.
With pinch runner Nick Jiles in for Otness, Nick Batkoski grounded out, advancing Jiles to second. Zach Clem was issued an intentional walk and senior pinch hitter Ben Johnson flied out to left to send the game to extra innings. Both teams went in order in the 10th.
UW starting pitcher Keaton Everitt struggled with his control in the first, issuing four walks and two wild pitches. The Tigers, however, were able to push only two runs across as Cody Ehlers' hard single through the right side drove in a pair of runners.
Washington tied the game at 2-2 in the second when Clem singled and scored on the second home run of the season from freshman DH Tyler Mach.
The Tigers moved back in front, 3-2, with a run in the fourth. James Boone reached first on a throwing error by UW shortstop Brent Lillibridge and scored when Jeremy Hernandez belted a two-out double to right-center field.
Mizzou increased its lead to 5-2 in the fifth when Ehlers connected for a two-run homer off of UW freshman reliever Kyle Parker. It was Ehlers' fourth homer of the year.
Otness' third homer of the season cut the Tiger lead to 5-3, but Missouri tacked on a sixth in the eighth inning off of UW junior reliever Will Fenton. Fenton walked the bases loaded and then threw a wild pitch that allowed Brad Flanders to score.
The Huskies threatened in the eighth. A two-out single from Clem drove home Isaacson, who had singled and stolen second. However, Scherzer struck out Taylor Johnson with the bases loaded to end the rally.
Isaacson paced the UW offense, going 3-for-5. Ehlers finished 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead MU.
Washington continues its six-game homestand next Friday through Sunday when Loyola Marymount travels to Seattle for a three-game series.
