PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State third baseman Zach McAngus hit two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning, as the Cougar baseball team came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Washingon, 11-5, Friday in the first game of a three-game, non- conference series at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Husky loss meant that 12th-year head coach Ken Knutson will have to wait to pick up his 400th win. His record fell to 399-258-2 while Washington dropped to 10-5-1 on the year. The Cougars improved to 13-5.
The Cougars' home opener also marked the first game played on Bailey-Brayton Field's new FieldTurf surface, the first such college field in the nation.
McAngus, a sophomore transfer from Air Force, belted the grand slam in the eighth, connecting off of UW closer Will Fenton with one down and the score tied at 4-4. The Cougars started the rally when UW reliever Trent Baysinger (1-1) gave up a hit and a walk to open the eighth inning. After a bunt moved the runners to second and third, Fenton intentionally walked Jason Freeman before giving up the homer to McAngus. WSU went on to pad its lead with three more runs in the eighth.
McAngus' first homer tied the game at 4-4 as he greeted Baysinger, who entered the game to begin the seventh inning, with a solo home run, his first as a Cougar.
Cougar senior reliever Garrett Alwert (1-1) came on in the top of the eighth to earn the win.
The Huskies took the lead on the game's first pitch as sophomore shortstop Brent Lillibridge belted WSU starter Aaron MacKenzie's first offering out of the park for his third home run of the year. Lillibridge also homered in the ninth to post the Huskies' fifth run.
Washington tacked on three more runs in third. Lillbridge singled, stole second and scored on a single from freshman DH Matt Lane. Two batters later, first baseman Kyle Larsen laced a double down the right-field line to drive in Lane and Zach Clem, who was hit by a pitch.
WSU scored its first run in the third when McAngus walked, moved to second on a groundout and to third on a passed ball, scored when Justin McClure's hard grounder was mis-handled by Larsen, who was playing in with the runner at third. WSU scored two more in the fifth to cut the UW edge to 4-3. Brandon Reddinger doubled to drive in one and then scored on a single from Kaeo Rubin.
Both starters -- UW's Tim Lincecum and WSU's MacKenzie -- threw six innings, but neither figured into the decision.
The Huskies and Cougars continue the three-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
