FULLERTON, Calif.- The ninth-ranked Washington softball team (20-6) defeated Princeton 4-0 this afternoon at the Kia Klassic to win its pool 3-0.
Washington got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a pair of runs on one hit and two Tiger errors. Sophomore Sarah Hyatt led off the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Dena Tyson walked and Amanda Oleson reached base on a fielder's choice to score pinch runner Jamie Rau. Tyson scored on a sacrifice fly by Callie Bergan to give UW to 2-0 advantage.
UW pushed its lead to three runs in the sixth inning on one hit and another Princeton error. Kristen Rivera reached base on an error by the Tiger's third baseman. Tyson followed with a double to centerfield and a Rivera scored on a sacrifice fly by Oleson.
Washington added one more run in the seventh inning when Rita Roach scored on a fielder's choice. Roach had reached base on a walk, stole second and moved to third on a single by Dominique Lastrapes.
Junior ace Ashley Boek (12-3) logged the shutout victory as she scatted four hits and struck out five.
With the 3-0 tournament record, Washington receives a first round bye in the Kia Klassic championship bracket. The Huskies will play the winner of the Nebraska/Oklahoma game Saturday at 5 p.m.
